Introduction




Within this blog, we will focus on the literary genre of dystopian literature. First of all, we will analyze and describe what this genre that is found within the "young adult literature" consists of, paying attention to the elements that usually appear as propaganda, restrictions and a series of characters that live trapped in a fictitious utopian society. In addition, we will comment on the several kinds of dystopian controls such as corporate, bureaucratic, technological and philosophical or religious control, being them different and with specific features. Then, the nature of the dystopian protagonists’ personality will be tackled and discussed. After that, we will enter in the commentary and analysis of two films within this genre: The Hunger Games and Divergent, two important film inspired in the books of the respective authors, Suzanne Collins and Veronica Roth.

In terms of these two literary and film series, we will explore and comment on the social issues depicted in both, which have to do with the post-apocalyptic setting and, or the political regime in which their stories take place. Along with the themes of social issues, we will take a look at the most relevant characters in both franchises, who as in both cases as well face the dire consequences of the world they live in. Apart from the topics of social issues and characters, we will include the sources and links which helped us document our posts, and also as a way to credit the content creators.

We can also add that we selected these two franchises because of their popularity and relevance, and since they are very representative of the current dystopian literature genre, topic itself which will also be covered in its own post, relating to the broader characteristics found in both and more generally to dystopian works of fiction. Finally, another reason why we chose these two sagas is our personal taste.
